Antony lives on the south coast of England and exhibits locally. (Check the 'Happenings Page' for details of forthcoming events).
His interest lies largely in pattern and illusion - stripping things back to their simplest form. He likes to fool the eye (or the mind) using many techniques to create the original artwork – and to ‘fiddle around’ with ideas to see what happens – sometimes using different media to explore the same theme. When asked to describe his watercolour work he says his style has developed through a fusion of graphic and watercolour techniques. It fools many people who, at first glance think his paintings (particularly his animal portraits) are photographs. When asked why he does not usually include a background, preferring 'negative space' as it is known, his reply is, 'What is the painting about? I want people to focus on the subject. The brain is an amazing thing - it sees and adds missing elements to make sense of the whole.' He often mounts his work off-set to add interest and direct the focus of the eye.

From the comments Antony receives, it would seem that his theatrical background is apparent within his work – dramatic and bold. (Antony holds a 1st Class BEd Honours degree in Theatre/Expressive Arts and Primary Education). He says that 'maybe it is a subconscious way of expressing my inner self. My interest in history often features highly, too'.
People often tell him that his images remain with them in their minds and find themselves drawn back for a second look - there are often subtleties within the boldness. They then decide to make them a part of their own lives.
Antony has recently left his role as an Education Officer (a member of the award winning team) at Fishbourne Roman Palace in West Sussex to focus upon other interests. He was also an Arts Award Adviser at the site - for Bronze and Silver levels - 11 to 25 year olds. As part of his role in the Heritage Sector he often led focused art courses for both children and adults - which ranged from mosaic work, through ceramics to painting, textiles and book-binding. He still offers these courses to small groups. Please contact him for more details.
