I will be able to hold my usual exhibition at the Priory Playhouse - see the Happenings page for full details.
I have now moved and beginning to settle into the new house.
I have been unable to sign up to the Arundel Gallery Trail this year as my venue has not yet decided if will be safe to open and the closing date for registration has now passed. If it is deemed safe I will be at the Priory Playhouse - but as an independent exhibition - dates and times to follow. Unfortunately I will be unable to give my usual talks about the Playhouse this year due to Covid restrictions. Due to the uncertainty I have been lucky enough to obtain space at the Arundel Museum's Summer Exhibition (August 1st - 30th) - so I will still have a presence in Arundel this year. Six pieces of my work will be available to see or buy. There is a £1 donation as entry fee to the exhibition. I have not been very active in the art department recently as 2020 threw many curved balls my way - one of which is an attempt to move house. This has meant much de-cluttering and sorting. In my sorting I found many off-cuts from card inserts that "might come in useful". They did as, because I am not able to produce any artwork at the moment, I have been turning these into coptic-bound notebooks! I knew it was worth keeping them.
Today should have been the opening of the Arundel Gallery Trail 2020. Unfortunately it has been cancelled. Feel free to contact about any pieces you may be interested in. They may be less expensive than you imagine. Use the contact form.
Lots happening in my world at present which is detracting from painting and artwork, unfortunately. I have managed to do these, though. Four characters from Shakespeare - focusing upon iconic moments or character traits/flaws. Been busy creating a new papercut piece based on an original design I created many years ago. I love the mandala and kaleidoscopic effect of this piece - drawing your eye to the centre. I am often asked if I use a laser cutter to produce the paper cut work. I do not. Each piece is cut and shaped by hand using a surgeon's scalpel. I have the scars to prove it (and an extensive vocabulary of Anglo-Saxon words used when a mistake is made). :)
I may be furloughed from the day job - but I have been kept busy with commissions of all types - pet portraits, decoupage work and even garlands of paper flowers.
If you like what you have seen then feel free to contact me via the Contact the Artist page if you wish to know more about commissioning or purchasing a piece of work. There is no obligation and the price may surprise you - as I believe art should be affordable for all. I am often asked how do I go about creating a commissioned piece of a loved animal.
I work from photographic reference - so I always ask to be sent a few good quality photographs that capture the animal's character or endearing habits. Then I roughly sketch out the piece and block in areas of colour. Then it begins... I always start with the head (usually the eyes). Why? Most of an animals character is expressed through the eyes (as it is with people) or facial expression - and our brains tell us to direct our attention to the eyes and face. Once I have captured the face and eyes the rest of the painting follows a 'what did I notice next?' pattern. I paint systematically. I do not follow the techniques painfully expressed in the technique books - I remain faithful to myself adn blaze my own trail. Due to the restrictions currently in place regarding the COVID-19 situation, the organisers of the Gallery Trail 2020 have reluctantly decided to cancel this year's event. Anyone interested in pieces of artwork should contact me via the Contact form for further details and prices.
